World Trauma Day 2025 Observed at The Apollo University with Focus on Emergency Preparedness

The Emergency Medical Technology (EMT) of the Division of Allied Health Sciences, School of Health Sciences, The Apollo University, Chittoor, observed World Trauma Day on 17th October 2025 by organizing a grand awareness program themed “Empower, Educate, Eradicate Trauma.” The event aimed to raise awareness on the importance of immediate medical response, effective injury management, and life-saving interventions in trauma situations.

The event commenced with an inaugural ceremony led by Prof. K. Bhaskar Reddy, Dean, School of Health Sciences, Dr. Sucharitha P, In-Charge Head, Division of Allied Health Sciences, and Ms. Subashree K, Assistant Professor and Programme Coordinator, EMT, who welcomed the gathering. The program was inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) H. Vinod H. Bhat, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, The Apollo University, and was attended by faculty, students, and healthcare professionals from allied health sciences and medical divisions. In his inaugural address, Dr. Vinod H. Bhat emphasized the need for prompt responses and preparedness in trauma management. He highlighted that “trauma poses a constant threat to human life worldwide, with road accidents being a major cause of fatalities in India.” He further stressed that the ability to respond swiftly and efficiently during emergencies can make the difference between life and death. He also appreciated the students who have prepared a short video of roleplay on the theme and endorsed that the recording is a perfect piece for community education during their outreaches for awareness.

Dr. Ganesh, FRCEM, MRCP (UK), Senior Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, was the Special Invitee. Dr. Ganesh (FRCEM, MRCP UK) delivered a short keynote address in the inaugural session, explaining the critical importance of early response, systematic assessment, and coordinated trauma care. He elaborated on how trained Emergency Medical Technologists becomes the backbones of the physicians who play a vital role in saving countless lives through structured intervention and rapid decision-making during critical moments in consultation with the physicians. He assured that it is a well developed and a very hopeful profession in the future, who will be the right hands of the doctors.

A short film titled ‘Lifesaver’, created by EMT students, was showcased as part of the departmental initiative, depicting real-life emergency scenarios and demonstrating effective first response techniques in trauma care. The inaugural session was followed by technical session focused on initial assessment protocols, airway management, control of hemorrhage, fracture stabilization, and safe patient transportation. Practical demonstrations were conducted by faculty and senior students from the EMT division under the guidance of the expert resource person. Participants engaged in role-play and group discussions on case-based trauma situations such as road traffic accidents, industrial injuries, and cardiac emergencies. The session enhanced decision-making and teamwork skills crucial in emergency medical care.

The day concluded with an awards and valedictory session recognizing outstanding student performances in trauma response demonstrations and poster presentations. Prof. Ramayya Itumalla, Dean, School of Management, Dr. D Jagadeeshan, Dean, School of Technology, Dr. Ramya Ramakrishnan, Associate Dean, AIMSR, and Dr. SethuramaSubbiah, Controller of Examinations graced the occasion, along with faculty coordinators Ms. Anwesha Paul, Ms. Thoti Manasa, and faculty members from the School of Health Sciences.

The session enhanced awareness among students on trauma prevention and first response and strengthened practical knowledge of early trauma management and life-saving techniques. The event was a true display of interdisciplinary participation and collaboration between medical and allied health professionals to developing skilled healthcare professionals capable of saving lives through timely intervention and informed action.
