Innovative Minds Shine at Apollo University’s Project Expo 2024 in Tribute to Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

The Apollo University’s Institution’s Innovation Council organised the highly anticipated Project Expo 2024 on campus, in remembrance of India’s ‘Missile Man’ and former President, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. The event was inaugurated by the Registrar of the university, who served as the Chief Guest for the occasion. His inspiring address paid tribute to Dr. Kalam’s vision for innovation and his deep commitment to the development of science and technology in India, motivating students to follow in his footsteps by embracing curiosity and creativity.
After paying tribute to his photo by showing flower petals, the Registrar also highlighted the need to understand the difference between innovation and invention. In conclusion, he reminded the students to dream big, as there are always possibilities for innovators. He reminded us of the need to inspire youngsters to follow the legacy of Dr. Kalam, who is a human and innovator with all his spirit.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by distinguished faculty members, including Dr. Alfread Augustine, Dean of AIMSR (Apollo Institute of Medical Sciences and Research), Dr Ramya Ramakrishnan, Associate Dean, AIMSR, Prof Dr K. Bhaskar Reddy, Dean of AIPS and SOHS, Dr. Charupalli Sunil Kumar, Dean (I/C), School of Technology (SOT) and Dr Ramaiah Itumalla, Dean (I/C), School of Management (SOM). Their presence underscored the university’s collective support for fostering innovation and research excellence among students. The delegates congratulated the efforts of Dr. D. Jagadeesan and Dr J. Jegan, who is the president and convener of IIC at The Apollo University, for their tireless efforts to make the event a successful one.
A total of 14 cutting-edge projects were showcased at the expo, demonstrating the ingenuity and problem-solving capabilities of the students. Some of the standout innovations included: a Mental Health Chatbot: A virtual tool designed to provide support for mental health issues by offering real-time assistance and guidance. A Smart Glove, which is a wearable device aimed at improving communication for differently-abled individuals through sensor-enabled gestures and a Sensor-Enabled Device for Mining and Quarry Safety, designed to enhance safety standards in high-risk mining and quarry environments, were also the highlights.
The visitors were attracted by the concept of the Third Eye, which is a sensor-based device developed for the visually impaired to aid in navigation by detecting obstacles and providing auditory feedback. A Voice-Controlled Wheelchair that responds to voice commands, offering greater mobility and independence for individuals with disabilities, was also another attraction for the visitors. The young minds were enthusiastic in designing a Virtual Assistant with Voice Recognition, which is a device designed to assist users in various daily tasks through advanced voice recognition technology. Sensors for Temperature, Pulse and Alcohol Detection presented in the expo are multi-functional sensors capable of monitoring vital health indicators and detecting alcohol levels.
The expo served as a platform for students from different streams to exhibit their innovative projects, merging creativity with technology to address real-world challenges. The projects received enthusiastic applause from faculty, students and industry representatives present at the event. The dedication and passion exhibited by the students reflect the values of scientific excellence and visionary thinking championed by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
