Celebrating Knowledge: National Librarian’s Day 2024 at The Apollo University
The Apollo University, Chittoor, celebrated National Librarian’s Day 2024 on 12th August at 10:00 AM in Lecture Hall 1, commemorating the birthday of Mr. S.R. Ranganathan, the pioneer of library development in India. The event served as an opportunity to highlight the importance of reading and knowledge access for the young minds at The Apollo University. Organized by the Reader’s Club of the university, the event featured the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Dr. H. Vinod Bhat, as the Chief Guest, who offered a floral tribute to the portrait of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, followed by other delegates.
In his keynote address, Prof. Bhat took the students on a journey through the history of libraries, tracing their origins to the Mesopotamian and Greek civilizations. He skillfully navigated the evolution of libraries, highlighting how technological advancements have made it possible for modern generations to carry entire libraries in their pockets today. His speech provided valuable insights into the role of libraries in distinguishing between information gathering and the pursuit of knowledge. Prof. Bhat concluded by encouraging students to cultivate a habit of reading, suggesting they start by reading at least one book per month.
Following a brief introduction to the biography of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan by Dr. T. Raghunadhan, the Assistant Librarian, Dr. B. Nageswara Rao, the faculty coordinator of the Reader’s Club, addressed the gathering. He emphasized the importance of the Reader’s Club in enlightening young minds and fostering wisdom. The inaugural session was followed by an informative session led by Dr. I. Ramaiah, Dean of the School of Technology. In his inspirational talk, Dr. Ramaiah captivated the students by introducing them to the extensive library facilities available at TAU.
