Quenching Birds’ Thirst: Eco Club Students Create Bird Feeders from Coconut Shells

Quenching Birds’ Thirst: Eco Club Students Create Bird Feeders from Coconut Shells

In response to the scorching summer conditions affecting the region, The Apollo University, Chittoor, through its Eco Club, undertook a thoughtful and impactful initiative to support bird survival on 02nd May 2025 at 2.30 PM. Titled as an effort to “Quench Birds’ Thirst,” the programme was a commitment to environmental conservation and compassion towards all living beings. Recognizing that extreme heat leads to depletion of natural water sources and scarcity of food for birds, the students launched an eco-friendly campaign aimed at providing accessible food and water across the campus.

The initiative revolved around a simple yet innovative idea—repurposing discarded coconut shells into sustainable feeders. Students carefully collected, cleaned, and transformed these shells into small containers, which were then securely fastened to tree branches throughout the campus. These were filled with grains and water, creating safe and easily accessible feeding points for birds. What made the initiative particularly remarkable was its simplicity and sustainability, turning waste materials into life-saving resources.

The programme was inaugurated at the Administrative Block of the Apollo Knowledge City campus by Registrar Prof. M. Potharaju, Additional Registrar Mr. Anil Kumar S., and Unit Head Mr. S. Balaraj. They commended the students for their creativity and sense of responsibility, highlighting that environmental conservation is not a distant concept but a shared duty that begins with small, mindful actions. They emphasized that such efforts not only help in preserving biodiversity but also instill a sense of responsibility among individuals.

The Eco Club representatives elaborated on the urgency of the initiative, noting that during peak summer, birds face severe challenges in accessing food and water, often pushing them to the brink of survival. In such conditions, even small interventions can have a significant impact. The programme, therefore, aimed not only at providing immediate relief to birds but also at raising awareness about environmental conservation and sustainable living practices.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members, reflecting a collective commitment towards ecological responsibility. Key contributors included Dr. S. Firoz Begum, Eco Club Faculty Coordinator, Dr. Hima Bindu G B, ICC Chairperson, and Dr. B. Nageswara Rao, Associate Dean, SoT whose involvement strengthened the initiative and encouraged wider participation.

Beyond its practical impact, the initiative served as a meaningful reminder of the delicate relationship between humans and nature. By engaging in this activity, students demonstrated that compassion, when combined with creativity, can lead to impactful change. The gently swaying coconut shell feeders across the campus stood as symbols of awareness, responsibility, and hope. The Eco Club’s “Quenching Birds’ Thirst” initiative showcased how small actions can create significant environmental impact.
