A Dream Blossoms: Herbal Garden Inaugurated at Apollo College of Nursing

In a moment that marked a beautiful blend of tradition, sustainability, and scientific spirit, Apollo College of Nursing (ACON) proudly inaugurated its Herbal Garden of Medicinal Plants on March 1, 2025, at 3:30 PM in collaboration with the NSS Unit of ACON and the Eco Club of The Apollo University. The garden stands as a living symbol of ACON’s commitment to holistic health, natural healing, and experiential learning for its students.
The inauguration was graced by the honorable Vice Chancellor of The Apollo University, Dr. H. Vinod Bhat, who opened the garden amidst much anticipation and joy by planting the first sapling. Dr. Bhat, a strong proponent of integrating traditional wisdom with modern science, encourages students to embrace the healing power of nature as a complement to clinical practice.
The occasion marked a dream come true moment for the institution, backed by the strong leadership and guidance of Registrar Dr. M. Potharaju, who turned the vision into a practical success. The event witnessed the gracious presence of Registrar Dr. M. Potharaju, Dean of AIMSR Dr. Alfred J Augustine, and Deans of all Schools of The Apollo University, all of whom lauded the initiative as a path-breaking step. The Herbal Garden, carefully curated with a wide variety of 40 medicinal plants and 80 flowering plants used in traditional and modern healthcare practices, will serve as a learning hub for students of nursing and other programmes. The initiative is also part of the commitment of the college to pour respect for our natural resources and ancestral knowledge.
This green initiative was led passionately by the Principal of ACON, Prof. T. Jayanti, and Vice Principal Dr. Jinto Mathew, who envisioned the Herbal Garden not only as a living laboratory for students but also as a symbol of ACON’s deep-rooted devotion to nature and eco-campus. The herbal garden is visualized to become a vital space for hands-on learning, research, and awareness about the role of natural remedies in healthcare. From Tulsi and Neem to Hibiscus and Guava, each plant tells a story of healing, heritage, and hope.
The garden’s ongoing maintenance and development will be overlooked by the NSS Unit headed by Ms. Lavanya, Assistant Professor from Apollo College of Nursing, with the support of The Eco Club of The Apollo University led by Dr. Firoz Begam, Faculty Coordinator ensuring it thrives as a green legacy for future learners. The Herbal Garden invites students and visitors alike to reconnect with the roots of healing and reminds us of all that the future of healthcare lies not only in technology, but also in the wisdom of nature.
