From a Wish to an Identity: The Success Story of Dharaniya

Introduction

For many, psychology is simply a subject to study. For me, it was always a wish—a quiet aspiration I carried with me since my college days: to sit beside someone during their darkest moments and help them find a way toward the light.

Today, that wish has become my identity.

I am Dharaniya, an M.Sc. Clinical Psychology (2023–2025) graduate of The Apollo University, and I am currently working as a Psychologist and Counsellor at New Life Foundation – De-addiction and Rehabilitation Centre, Chennai.

My Academic Journey at The Apollo University

My journey at The Apollo University from 2023 to 2025 was about much more than academics. It was a period of exposure, experience, learning, and personal growth.

During my Master’s programme, I developed a strong foundation in Psychopathology, Psychological Assessment, and Psychotherapy. At the same time, I actively participated in the life of the department through various academic and extracurricular activities. I had opportunities to organise and participate in departmental events, mental health awareness programmes, and seminars.

These experiences helped me develop valuable skills in leadership, teamwork, communication, and professional responsibility. They also gave me opportunities to understand psychology beyond textbooks and classrooms.

A particularly meaningful part of my academic journey was my final-year dissertation. With the guidance and continuous support of the faculty members of the Department of Psychology, I successfully completed my research work. Their mentorship not only strengthened my research skills but also contributed significantly to the development of my clinical thinking, professional values, and ethical approach as a future psychologist.

Beginning My Career

Soon after completing my Master’s degree in 2025, I began my professional journey at New Life Foundation – De-addiction and Rehabilitation Centre, Chennai, where I work as a Psychologist and Counsellor.

For me, this role is much more than a job. It is an opportunity for continuous learning, professional growth, and meaningful service.

My work involves conducting detailed psychological assessments to understand the psychological and other co-occurring difficulties associated with addiction. I provide individual therapy using approaches and techniques including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), and relapse-prevention strategies.

I also facilitate group therapy, motivational groups, and life-skills sessions, creating opportunities for clients to develop insight, coping skills, motivation, and healthier ways of managing their lives.

Another important aspect of my work is family counselling and psychoeducation. I work with families to support healthier communication, rebuild trust, establish appropriate boundaries, and prepare them to support the client’s recovery and aftercare journey.

Every day brings a new experience and a new lesson. Working with individuals and families has helped me understand that psychological practice is not only about applying theories and techniques—it is also about listening with empathy, understanding without judgement, and supporting individuals through the process of change.

Looking Back with Gratitude

Looking back, my journey from being a student at The Apollo University in 2023 to becoming a practising Psychologist in 2025 has been a journey of purpose, learning, growth, and self-discovery.

The University gave me more than academic knowledge. It provided me with opportunities to learn, explore, participate, and develop the confidence to take my first steps into the professional world. The guidance and encouragement of my faculty members played an important role in shaping my professional journey.

Today, my heart is filled with gratitude as I look at how far I have come.
