Together, we can raise our voices for a drug-free India
In light of a ‘Zero Tolerance Policy against Narcotics’ guided by the Honorable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, the NSS wing of The Apollo University Chittoor organized an awareness campaign on drug addiction and its prevention on 20th July 2024 at 2.00 PM in the university lecture hall including several programs. The one-day awareness program aimed to strengthen actions and invest in preventive measures to achieve a world free of drug use. Central to addressing this challenge, the NSS unit of the university aimed to educate and sensitize college students to lead a healthy life that is free from drugs and their abuses.
The session was started with several competitions for university students namely, poster presentations, elocution and short film competition from 10.00 AM to 12.00 AM based on the theme drug awareness and prevention. The competition was followed by a student rally at 1.30 PM inside the campus with an encouraging response due to the participation of staff and students in recommending strategies to foster resilience against drug usage.
The Honorable Vice Chancellor of The Apollo University, Dr. H. Vinod Bhatt, was the chief guest of the afternoon session of expert talks. In his address, the Vice Chancellor stressed the importance of converting such campaigns into a mission to create awareness about the ill effects of substance abuse and the need to take a vow to stay away from addiction. The Vice Chancellor also urged that, as far as the university is concerned, the youth population is the backbone of the institution, and in their vulnerable age, there are chances of falling into traps. He also shed light on training youngsters to become responsible citizens and act as beacons to render cooperation in eradicating the menace of drug use among youth.
The resource person for the session, Dr. T. Jayapriya, Assistant Professor of the Department of Psychiatry at Apollo Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (AIMSR), Chittoor, urged considering drug use as a threat to human rights and social dynamics that destroy the mental state of a consumer. The youth can play a critical role in managing the vulnerable situation in partnership with the anti-drug campaign by influencing peer groups, friends, and family, she added. Reflecting on the issue, Mr. Y. Vijaykumar, the Enforcement Inspector of the Special Enforcement Bureau, stressed the importance of community engagement in designing effective prevention initiatives against drug use. He provided case studies by adding the laws, rules, regulations, and consequences a person has to face after being found involved in narcotic cases. Congratulating the university and NSS efforts to assist social responsibility, the inspector talked about the importance of amplifying collaborations to execute policies to foster a supportive environment, quoting examples from his life experiences.
Prof. Potharaju M., Registrar, The Apollo University, Chittoor, offered complete support to a serene campus and social environment that is free from drugs and their abuses. Dr. D. Shahanaz, Program Coordinator and Assistant Professor in the School of Management, made an admirable effort in organizing the event to a grand success for future policy recommendations. Program Officers of NSS Units 1 and 2, Mr. P. Ashok Reddy and Dr. S. Jakeer, furnished their unmitigated support to raise a society free from drugs and their addictions.
