Substance Abuse – The Silent Crisis

“Substance Abuse – The Silent Crisis” Awareness Programme Held at Apollo Knowledge City
The Apollo Knowledge City Campus, Chittoor, organized an awareness programme titled “Substance Abuse – The Silent Crisis” on 10th December 2025, with the objective of sensitizing students, faculty members, and the academic community to the growing threat of substance abuse among youth and its far-reaching consequences on society and the nation. The programme witnessed an overwhelming response, with large participation from students, teaching staff, and administrative personnel, reflecting the seriousness of the issue and the relevance of the initiative.
The session was graced by Shri Gurajala Jagan Mohan Naidu, Hon’ble MLA, Chittoor, as the Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering, the MLA delivered a powerful and thought-provoking message, describing substance abuse as a “silent war being waged against the future of Indian youth.” He expressed deep concern over the increasing infiltration of drug networks into smaller towns, educational institutions, and even school environments. Emphasizing that drug abuse is not merely a personal weakness but a well-planned assault on the nation’s intellectual and economic strength, he warned that drug mafias are targeting young minds to weaken India’s global rise, particularly in sectors such as IT, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
The Hon’ble MLA highlighted that India’s growing recognition on the global stage—through its professionals, CEOs, scientists, and entrepreneurs—has drawn envy from hostile forces, who now view narcotics as a weapon to destabilize society from within. He urged students to uphold discipline, moral values, and responsibility, and appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and immediately report any drug-related information to law enforcement authorities. He also announced plans to create a film aimed at spreading awareness about the dangers of addiction and the importance of prevention, especially among youth.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. M. Potharaju, Registrar, The Apollo University, endorsed the institution’s guarantee to maintaining a drug-free, ragging-free, and pollution-free campus. He assured that Apollo Knowledge City would extend full cooperation to the police department and public representatives in efforts to curb the spread of substance abuse in society. He emphasized the role of educational institutions as the first line of defense in prevention through awareness, mentoring, and value-based education.
Officials from the police department, including CI Maheshwar, Circle Inspector (CI) of the Chittoor One Town police station, Chittoor Rural CI Nithya Babu, and II Town CI Nettikantaiah, addressed the gathering and provided practical insights into how substance abuse affects individuals, families, and communities. They explained the psychological, social, and legal consequences of drug addiction, supported by real-life examples, and encouraged students to stay informed, alert, and responsible.
The programme was attended by several dignitaries, including the Mayor of Chittoor, Smt. S. Amudha, Dr. Alfred J. Augustine, Dean, Apollo Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (AIMSR), Shri S. Balaraj, Unit Head, AKC, local leaders, public representatives, faculty members, and students. The collective presence of academic leaders, administrators, law enforcement officials, and elected representatives strengthened the message that combating substance abuse requires a united and sustained effort. The awareness programme concluded on a strong note, leaving participants with a renewed sense of responsibility and awareness. The initiative successfully highlighted the dangers of substance abuse, the importance of early prevention, and the collective role of institutions, families, and society in protecting the future of youth.
