A Tribute to the Iron Man of India: TAU Commemorates National Unity Day 2025
National Unity Day was observed with dignity and spirited participation at The Apollo University to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the great architect of India’s political integration. The event was jointly organized by the NSS Units 1 and 2 of The Apollo University and the Social Responsibility Club to promoting national cohesion, civic responsibility, and the values of collective progress.
The commemoration commenced with floral tributes to the portrait of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Dr. H. Vinod Bhat, accompanied by Registrar Professor M. Potharaju and other senior dignitaries. The Vice Chancellor addressed and impressed the audience by taking them into the journey of post-independence and the unification of princely states to India as we see today as a nation. He delivered a compelling and intellectually enriching address, guiding the audience through the transformative period of post-independence nation-building and the arduous task of integrating the princely states into a unified India. He offered a detailed narrative on the pivotal role played by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in negotiating, persuading, and, when required, firmly securing the accession of 565 princely states, thereby preventing territorial fragmentation at a critical moment in history.
Through his vivid and articulate portrayal of these historical struggles, he enabled the students to comprehend the magnitude of the challenges involved in shaping India’s political geography—far beyond the static boundaries they are familiar with in contemporary maps. His address served to inspire the younger generation to recognize and appreciate the extraordinary leadership, diplomatic acumen, and unwavering resolve that laid the foundation of a united India, urging them to uphold these ideals in their journey as responsible citizens of the nation.
Drawing from the life and leadership of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Vice Chancellor also emphasized the importance of cultivating independence of thought and mutual respect even within the same family or community. He highlighted that, despite diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and personal aspirations, the larger purpose must always be the progress of the nation. Ultimately, he said, what binds us together is our identity as Indians, and it is this shared identity that should guide our actions no matter where we live, work, or choose to build our futures. He remarked that Sardar Patel’s foresight, patriotism, and statesmanship laid the foundational ethos of modern India and continue to stand as an enduring inspiration for the youth of the nation. Dr. Bhat urged students to imbibe the values of national unity, service, and integrity, and to contribute meaningfully to the strengthening of India’s social fabric.
Registrar Professor M. Potharaju, also with his presence reiterated that the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is not merely historical, but deeply relevant to contemporary India. As the nation continues to expand its global presence, the collective responsibility to protect and celebrate unity remains paramount. His remarks encouraged the student community to channel their energy towards nation-building and to act as responsible citizens in all spheres of life.
As part of the observance, students enthusiastically took part in the National Unity Quiz, which aimed to enhance awareness regarding the life, contributions, and ideals of Sardar Patel. A short documentary highlighting Patel’s political wisdom and the monumental task of integrating the princely states was screened, followed by a culturally engaging skit performed by NSS students, portraying the theme of unity amidst diversity. The performance drew appreciation for its thoughtful interpretation and expressive presentation. The ceremony culminated with the collective National Unity Pledge, where all participants affirmed their commitment to preserving the sovereignty, integrity, and harmony of the nation. The pledge served as a powerful reminder of the shared responsibility inherent in maintaining the unity and strength of India.
The program was graced by the presence of Dr. Jagadeesan, Dean, School of Technology, Dr. S. Hemadri Reddy, NSS Program Coordinator, NSS Officers Dr. Shaik Jakeer and Ms. Gayathri, and Dr. Divya A, Faculty Coordinator of the Social Responsibility Club, along with NSS volunteers, club members, and a large number of students whose active participation made the event meaningful and impactful. The National Unity Day celebration was a dedication to nurturing socially conscious, patriotic, and community-oriented future leaders of the nation.
