The Apollo University Marks International Ozone Protection Day with Inspiring Reflections and Student Pledges

Students pledge to protect Earth on International Ozone Protection Day

The Apollo University Students’ Eco Club observed the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on 16th September 2025 with great passion and a deep sense of responsibility towards the planet. The event, held at the Dr. Prathap C. Reddy Knowledge Centre, was graced by Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. H. Vinod Bhat, who addressed students with an enlightening and powerful message on the critical importance of protecting the ozone layer.

In his keynote address, Prof. Bhat traced the remarkable journey of ozone research, from its discovery in 1912 to the alarming revelation of 40% depletion in 1985, and underscored the historic significance of the 1987 Montreal Protocol as a turning point in global environmental policy. With his characteristic warmth and wisdom, he described the ozone layer as the “natural shield for life on Earth,” emphasizing that its preservation is vital not only for human health but also for climate stability and the survival of generations yet to come. He reminded the audience that while ozone depletion is a scientific concern, its solution lies in human choices, discipline, and collective will.

The session was enriched with impactful videos and presentations on the significance of the ozone layer, international agreements, and the role of youth in safeguarding the planet. Students engaged in lively discussions, reflecting on how small changes in lifestyle—such as reducing the use of harmful chemicals, promoting sustainable consumption, and advocating for renewable energy—can cumulatively make a monumental difference.

One of the most touching moments of the program was the pledge undertaken by students to adopt sustainable practices, reduce their ecological footprint, and become ambassadors of environmental stewardship within their communities. Their commitment echoed the larger global vision of safeguarding the Earth for future generations.

The Eco Club also organized interactive awareness activities and a thematic discussion session under the strong message, “Protecting Ozone Means Protecting Earth.” Faculty members including Dr. S. Feroz Begum, Faculty Coordinator of the Eco Club, and Dr. Ramaiah Itumalla, Dean of the School of Management, guided the students through reflective exercises on environmental responsibility.

The event deepened the scientific understanding of ozone preservation and stirred the hearts of all participants, reminding them that environmental conservation is not a distant goal but a daily practice. The students carried with them a renewed sense of purpose—a pledge to protect the blue planet and preserve its fragile shield of life for generations to come.
